Fully Trained Adult Leaders

Scouts deserve fully trained adult leaders.

The absolute minimum training that any adult working with youth in Troop 186 must have is Virtus and BSA Youth Protection.  Virtus training is required by the Diocese of Winona for any adults working with children.  Training is offered through Rochester parishes, and does not expire, but adult volunteers can periodically check the web site for updates.  BSA's Youth Protection (YPT) training may be taken at local training classes by Gamehaven Council, and must be renewed every two years.  YPT and other training is also available online.  Links can be found on the Gamehaven Council training pages.

Leader Specific or Position Specific Training is based on the leaders position.  These courses are taught by informed trainers who know how to engage groups and make learning fun.  These courses are offered by Gamehaven Council as group training.  Leader Specific Training, which is typically taught on a Saturday, is slightly different for Scoutmasters and Troop Committee members.  Scoutmasters (and Assistant Scoutmasters) must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, which is taught as a weekend overnight camping event.  Scoutmasters completing Youth Protection, Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills are eligible to wear the "TRAINED" patch.

On-line training is available for Scout leaders in a number of topical areas in addition to Youth Protection, including hiking, aquatics, boating, and others.  Much of the training is available at the BSA Online Training Center, for which Scout Leader will need to register with their member number.

The highest level of training available to Boy Scout and Cub Scout leaders is Wood Badge.  This training requires two 3-day weekends, as well as follow-up work.  It is equivalent to a many-thousands-of-dollars leadership training program.  Wood Badge is not offered in Gamehaven Council, but is available elsewhere in Minnestoa.

And finally, Scout Leaders should consider attending the premier training available at the Philmont Training Center (PTC) at the Philmont Scout Ranch near Raton New Mexico.  They offer excellent training programs in conjunction with programs for the whole family, making it a wonderful vacation opportunity.
