Some Training Notes

Written by Bob Techentin on .

Cleaning out a few old boxes, I came across a small notebook from my trip to the Philmont Training Center in 2002. They have a great family program - adventures for all ages. And the Scouters get to spend a whole week in a terrific class. My class was on the ethics of scouting. We covered a lot of ground. If you can make the summer pilgrimage, it is well worth the trip.

Paging through the book, I find a few scattered thoughts that might be worth sharing.

Winter High Adventure

Written by Bob Techentin on .

Plans are progressing for our winter high adventure camp. We will embark on a camping trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe area near Ely, MN.

Departure will be on Thursday January 17th to travel to Virginia for one night in a hotel. We will get to Ely on Friday morning to get winter camping gear (tents with wood stoves) then ski or snow shoe  into boundary waters and set up camp. We will break camp and on Monday, January 21 to  return rented equipment and drive back to Rochester. Schools are not in session Friday or Monday so youth will not miss any school.

Activities will include: cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice fishing and possibly dog sledding. At night we should have good star gazing and possibly be treated to a show of the aurora borealis AKA "Northern Lights".

We will rent canvas tents with wood stoves to experience hot tent camping. Scouts will also have options to make a quinzhee or sleep under the stars.

Season Kickoff at GSR

Written by Bob Techentin on .

We had a great time at GSR this past weekend, working on campsite improvements, then a little leadership training and a leadership exercise.  Highlights form the day include felling a HUGE tree that had become unsafe, and then the Leadership Challenge, to cross the creek without getting wet.

Bighorn Mountains Conquered

Written by Bob Techentin on .

The Troop 186 high adventure crew originally planned a Philmont Trek in early July 2018.  Unfortunately, Philmont caught fire, and they closed the premier Boy Scout High Adventure camp for the season.  Undaunted, our crew quickly planned an alternative trek.
